As for pre-release or foil stamped cards, they must be a card form one of the 4 allowed sets, otherwise they cannot be used. So foil stamped Brock's Vulpix is allowed, pre-release Aerodactyl is not."
master_trainer_mike says, "You CAN use basic energy from any set though (don't have to rush out and get enough Gym energy). Remember Double Colorless energy is NOT basic and so is NOT allowed in this format."
