If a Raichu (or whatever) does Agility and flips heads, does an attack that would do damage to benched pokemon, or some other effect that does NOT do damage or something to Raichu work? A. Yes it would, while all attacks are considered against the defending Pokemon (which is why something that prevents attacks would stop it in this case), Agility only prevents the effects of that attack if they affect Raichu only. (Jul 19, 2001 WotC Chat, Q83) == FIRE WALL (Rocket's Moltres - Gym: Heroes Expansion) Q. If Rocket's Moltres used Fire Wall, then the opponent used Gust of Wind, then another Gust of Wind for the same Rocket's Moltres, would Rocket's Moltres still do 10 damage? A. No, it would not do the 10 damage, because the effect from his Fire Wall goes away when he goes to the bench. (Jul 19, 2001 WotC Chat, Q171) == HEADACHE (Psyduck - Fossil Expansion) [CHRISBO NOTE: This one has been updated for clarity] Q. Because of the Magby ruling [Ed.Note: see "Sputter" attack], does that mean if Psyduck does the attack where the opponent can't play trainers, can they just retreat to get rid of that effect? A. No, but if Psyduck is benched or evolved, leaves play etc. that effect will go away. The attack creates an effect based on the Psyduck; if that Psyduck moves to the bench or gets knocked out somehow before the attack, then you would be able to play trainers again. (Jul 12, 2001 WotC Chat, Q77; Jul 19, 2001 WotC Chat, Q96) == HYPER REVERSE (Butterfree - Neo: Discovery Expansion) Q. If you use Hyper Reverse with Butterfree on a Agility-protected Raichu, would you take off damage? A. All effects of the attack are prevented, thus you don't do anything. [Ed.Note: Since no damage was done, Butterfree would not be able to remove any counters.] (Jul 19, 2001 WotC Chat, Q153) == MEGA BURN (Sabrina's Alakazam - Gym: Challenge Expansion) Q. Last week you said that if Sabrina's Alakazam was benched & returned to be Active, it could use Mega Burn again (ala Magby's Sputter effect going away). Does this extend to switching one Sabrina's Alakazam for another and being able to use the second one's Mega Burn now? A. What difference does it make? It is the benching that removes the "can't use this attack" status effect. (Jul 19, 2001 WotC Chat, Q31) ***** PREVIOUS RULING: THIS ONE HAS SINCE BEEN OVERRULED; See Above ***** Q. If I have two Sabrina's Alakazam's out, and if I used Mega Burn last turn, can I retreat the active one, bring out the second one, and use the second one's Mega Burn? A. You won't be able to use an attack named Mega Burn during your next turn. (Oct 26, 2000 WotC Chat, Q6) == PURSUIT (Umbreon - Neo: Discovery Expansion) Q. An Umbreon with a Pursuit attack has 4 Darkness Energy and it used Pursuit to the opponent. If the opponent retreats would the effect to 10 or do 50? I think its 50 because isn't the effect from Pursuit revelant of an attack and it also does base damage. A. It [the Pursuit effect] is not an attack, it is still just a status effect of an attack doing damage to it. [Ed.Note: So the act of retreating would only do 10, not 50.] (Jul 19, 2001 WotC Chat, Q45) == TELEKINESIS (Mewtwo - Promo) Q. Just to end it once & for all - NP Mewtwo can move Rainbow Energy right? A. No, you cannot, Rainbow is NOT basic... therefore you can't. (Jul 19, 2001 WotC Chat, Q93) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UNOWN CARDS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == DARKNESS (Unown-D - Neo: Discovery Expansion) Q. If Unown D is the defending Pokemon, can Murkrow's Feint Attack do 20 damage to a benched Pokemon? A. Unown D creates a defensive effect on all of your pokemon, although you would ignore the reduction on the Active, but everyone on the bench is still has this Defensive "shield" that prevents darkness damage. So you would not do 20 damage. (Jul 19, 2001 WotC Chat, Q72) Q. So if my opponent has Unown D benched, Murkrow's Feint Attack could do 20 (or more with dark) damage to the defending Pokemon?? A. Correct. (Jul 19, 2001 WotC Chat, Q103) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TRAINER CARDS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == DEVOLUTION SPRAY (Base Set) / HYPER DEVOLUTION SPRAY (Neo: Discovery Expansion) Q. If you Hyper Devo Spray an Eevolution so that Promo Eevee or NEO: Discovery Eevee is the Basic, can you re-evolve these if another Pokemon evolves/you get a heads? Same with Gyarados HDS to Magikarp from TR. A. Yes you could. (Jul 19, 2001 WotC Chat, Q66) == FOCUS BAND (Neo: Genesis Expansion) Q. My Opponent’s Pokemon has a Focus Band attached. I use an Attack that has the potential to Paralyze with a coin flip, but the Attack Damage is enough to Knock Out the Pokemon. If the Focus Band saves the Pokemon, do I then flip for Paralysis? A. Yes you would. (Jul 19, 2001 WotC Chat, Q20) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ENERGY CARDS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == RAINBOW ENERGY (Team Rocket Expansion) Q. When in play, does Rainbow Energy counts as a Basic Energy Card or a Special Energy Card? Rainbow Energy says that "it does not count as Basic Energy when not in play"; it does not, however, say that it does count as Basic Energy when it is in play. So does it? A. NEVER!!! ...it is always considerd to be a special energy, but it will produce any type of basic. It doesn't change to a basic itself. It never counts as a basic energy card as it isn't one. However, for attack and Pokemon power purposes, any card that provides energy of a certain type counts as an energy card of that type (not basic though). (Jul 19, 2001 WotC Chat, Q8 & Q18 & Q55) ***** PREVIOUS RULING: THIS ONE HAS SINCE BEEN OVERRULED; See Above ***** Q. On Rainbow Energy, it states "Doesn't count as a basic Energy Card when not in play." I assume from that statement then that it DOES count as a Basic Energy Card while in play? A. Correct. (April 27, 2000 WotC Chat Q47) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GENERAL GAMEPLAY ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == ATTACKING Q. What's the exact definition of "Defending Pokémon"? A. It is your opponent's Active Pokemon when you are attacking.
