Would Suicune's Crystal Body stop, say, Eeeeeeek? A. Yes. OK, here is the official answer from Japan. All attacks and all EFFECTS of attacks are considered to be done against the defending Pokemon, regardless of what those effects actually do. So Agility, or Suicune's Crystal Body can prevent all effects of the opponent's Active Pokemon. Meaning no Eeeeeking, no Fetch, no bench attacks, etc. Pretty strong huh? (Oct 18, 2001 WotC Chat, Q66; Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q99) Q. Given the new ruling about Crystal Body, would it prevent things like shuffling Water Energy back into your deck if you used Feraligatr's Riptide Attack? A. Yes, it would. Parasect's effect without the Parasect. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q124) Q. N3 Suicune is Teleport Blasted by Dark Alakazam. Do we get a blast with no Teleport? A. Correct. [Ed.Note: The damage is done, but the Teleport effect is not.] (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q210) Q. Since we're on a roll with the Suicune questions, would it block the placement of Damage counters, and things like Life Drain? A. Yes it would, placing damage counters is NOT the same as damage (doing damage). (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q205) Q. Would Suicune etc. not prevent bench damage from Feint Attack? A. Suicune doesn't stop damage anyway, so it would not stop the Feint damage done. It only stops all other effects of an attack. It also does NOT prevent any self inflicted effects, only those done by your opponent. Otherwise, it stops ALL non-damage attacks done by the defending Pokemon, period. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q173 & Q190) Q. Okay. Now you're saying Suicune doesn't block any damage, but before you said it blocks bench damage. Which is it? A. Suicune does not prevent damage in any way, whether damage done to it or to the bench, my apologies for not being clear about it. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q199) == FORTITUDE (Giovanni's Machamp - Gym: Challenge Expansion) Q. If a fully powered Crobat attacks a Giovanni's Machamp and 2 coins are heads [Ed.Note: thus confusing the G's Machamp], and the attack did sufficient damage to knock out Giovanni's Machamp... Giovanni's Machamp is still allowed to flip for Fortitude, right? (If instead of Crobat, a Magby attacks and Giovanni's Machamp has 10 HP left, the above still holds true also, correct?) A. Yes you would. This is the same exact issue as if you were using an attack that did damage and paralyzed against a Dark Gyarados. Damage is placed first, then if that triggers anything (in this case the Fortitude), that is checked BEFORE any other effect from the attack is done. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q117) == GAZE (Igglybuff - Neo: Discovery Expansion) Q. If I have an Igglybuff in play, and I flip heads for Chaos Gym in order to use a Trainer, can I use Iggly's Power to shut off one of my opponent's Pokemon Powers between the Chaos Flip and when I actually play the Trainer? A. No. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q88) == HEALING FIRE (Blaine's Ninetales - Gym: Challenge Expansion) Q. Does Fire Recharge set off Blaine's Ninetales' power? A. No, it won't trigger that. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q161) == LEGENDARY BODY (Entei, Raikou, & Suicune - Neo: Revelation Expansion) Q. If I have an active NON-holo Entei, can I used Double Gust and not bring him back to the bench? Meaning Double Gust, bring out their Pokemon, and retreat for what I want? A. Yes the Double Gust would still effect their Pokemon but not Entei. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q118) == TRANSPARENCY (Haunter - Fossil Expansion) Q. [Ed.Note: Following a similar question about Crystal Body power preventing Eeeeeeek...] What about Fossil Haunter's Transparency? Does it have to be active? A. Yup, works the same way. Yes, the Haunter must be active in order to stop things like Eeeeeeek and so on. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q99 & Q116 & Q130) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- POKEMON ATTACKS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == AGILITY (Raichu - Base Set, Rapidash - Jungle Expansion, others) Q. What's this I've been hearing about Agility and N3 Holo Suicune? A. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q99) ***** PREVIOUS RULING: THIS ONE HAS SINCE BEEN OVERRULED; See Above ***** Q. Does Rapidash's Agility Stop Kangaskhan's fetch? A. No. Agility only stops effects that target Rapidash. (Feb 24, 2000 WotC Chat) ***** PREVIOUS RULING: THIS ONE HAS SINCE BEEN OVERRULED; See Above ***** Q. Does Fearow's Agility attack block Kangaskhan's Fetch? A. Actually it does not; Fearow's Agility says stops damage done to Fearow, and the Fetch just draws a card. This is the new ruling from R&D. (Feb 3, 2000 WotC Chat) ***** PREVIOUS RULING: THIS ONE HAS SINCE BEEN REINSTATED; See Above ***** Q. If Rapidash uses agility and I flip heads am I still affected by Moltres' Wild Fire? A. Gee, I was asked this one last week. Same answer as for the Eevee/Tail Wag scenario. The Agility would prevent Moltres' WildFire Attack. (Jan 27, 2000 WotC Chat) == GENETIC MEMORY (Kingdra - Neo: Revelation Expansion) Q. What happens if Genetic Memory is metronomed by an evolved Pokémon? An unevolved Pokémon? A. If it was evolved that Pokemon would be able to use Genetic Memory to use an earlier attack. If it's unevolved then you don't need to worry. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q94) == PHOENIX FLAME (Blaine's Moltres - Gym: Heroes Expansion) Q. If Blaine's Moltres uses its attack on Dark Gyarados and Moltres would go into the deck, but Final Beam works and does enough to KO Blaine's Moltres, does Blaine's Moltres enter the deck, and does the player with Dark Gyarados get a prize? A. If the Phoenix Flame KO's Dark Gyarados, then the Final Beam will go off. If that KO's Blaine's Moltres, then it will not be shuffled back into the owner's deck. The Dark Gyarados player gets a prize as well. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q145) == SKETCH (Smeargle - Neo: Discovery Expansion) master_trainer_mike presents the speaker with question #123 from generalraikou: Q. With a Neo 3 Raichu vs. Smeargle and Raichu did its Lightning Strike attack last turn... and Smeargle has lets say 2 psychic energy on it, can it do 80 damage with Lightning Strike even without the L energy cards attached? A. Well, that is the second modal card in the new set. You could end up discarding zero lightning cards if you Metronomed or Sketched that attack and still do the 80 damage. We will verify this to be sure. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q123) == SWIPE (Sneasel - Neo: Revelation Expansion) Q. The wording on Neo:R Sneasel's Swipe attack says, "If heads, discard all Trainer cards attached to your opponent's Pokemon." Does that mean Trainers attached to their Benched Pokemon too? A. No, I think that's just referring to the defending Pokemon. You can consider that our answer for today. We will get official clarification as always from the rules team. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q82 & Q100) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UNOWN CARDS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == KEEP (Unown-K - Neo: Revelation Expansion) Q1. Does Unown K's power continue even if it's Asleep, Confused or Paralyzed? The card does not say. A1. You're right it doesn't. Assume the usual, if confused, paralyzed, or asleep, the Pokemon power is shut off. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q163) Q2. Then is that just a temporary ruling? A2. Yes, as we have been doing for almost 2 years now. Until we say it is official, it is just an interpretation. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q176 & Q183) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TRAINER CARDS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == BLAINE (Gym: Challenge Expansion) Q. Can Blaine be used to attach Rainbow Energy? A. No, it must be a fire energy when it is in your hand. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q164) == HEALING FIELD (Neo: Revelation Expansion) Q. If I use a Healing Field Stadium card, and flip heads to remove 2 damage counters from my Active Pokemon, can I then play another Healing Field and flip again on that same turn? A. Sure. I think that the stadium would effectively be reset if you did so. (Nov 15, 2001 WotC Chat, Q85 & Q126) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ENERGY CARDS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GENERAL GAMEPLAY ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == STARTING THE GAME Q. Under the new DCI rules for starting a game [Ed.Note: effective Oct. 2001], the Active Player resolves any Mulligans, then places a card. If the second player also has a Mulligan and the Active player draws an additional card that they want to start with, can that initial card be picked up? A. Nope!
