In the EX:Sandstorm set, there are 2 identical versions of Marill, but one has a retreat cost and one does not. Which one is the correct version and how shall the 2 different versions be played? A. This appears to be a fairly common mistake in the set. Play the card as written; if you have the Marill with the free retreat you may play it as such. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- POKEMON POWERS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == BABY EVOLUTION (several - EX:Sandstorm) Q. For the Pokemon with the power "Baby Evolution", can I use this power to attach its evolved form on the same turn it comes into play? A. Baby Evolution can be played on the first turn that Pokemon is in play....but not the first turn of the game. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. Does the "Baby Evolution" Poke-POWER get turned off when affected by a Special Condition? It doesn't say so on the card. A. Baby Evolution is unique as a Poke-Power. It is not turned off by Special Conditions. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. If EX-Sandstorm Pichu's "Baby Evolution" power is turned off by Muk's "Toxic Gas" power, does that mean that it cannot evolve into Pikachu? A. Pichu's Baby Evolution is the only way it evolves to Pikachu. If that is turned off, Pichu can't evolve. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. Can Elekid evolve into "Electabuzz EX" since Quilava can evolve into "Typhlosion EX"? A. Elekid's Baby Evolution states it can evolve into Electabuzz. Electabuzz and Electabuzz EX are two different names, thus considered two different Pokemon. So the answer to this question is "no". (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == ENERGY EVOLUTION (Eevee - Neo:Discovery) Q. For Neo Discovery Eevee, can you attach an energy and using its power (if heads) and evolve first turn? A. There is no current game mechanic that allows a Pokemon to evolve on the first turn of the game. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == ENERGY VARIATION (Kecleon - EX:Sandstorm) Q. If Kecleon has a Rainbow or Multi Energy attached, does it then get to be all colors?? A. It only applies to basic Energy cards. So, no. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. If Kecleon has several types of energy attached, is it ALL types simultaneously or do you have to choose which type it is at a given time? A. Energy Variation does not replace any types....Kecleon can be up to all 6 simultaneously; it can be multiple types at the same time. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. If Kecleon has several types of energy attached and the Defending Pokemon is both Weakness and Resistance to these types, does Kecleon have to apply both W & R or not? A. Apply them in order. Weakness, then Resistance. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. If Kecleon has two different colored basic energies attached, and it attacks a Pokemon with weakness to both of those colors (i.e. Kabutops-EX), is the weakness calculation doubled because Kecleon is both types? A. Sure. Damage would be up to x4 for the appropriate double Weakness. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == FIRE VEIL (Arcanine & Growlithe - EX:Sandstorm) Q. If a Pokemon's attack "places damage counters" on Growlithe or Arcanine, does it get to use its "Fire Veil" power or not? A. Damage counters are typically phrased that way to mean something other than damage. So, Fire Veil does not trigger on damage counters. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == FIRESTARTER (Blaziken - EX:Ruby/Sapphire) Q. Is Blaziken's "Firestarter" Poke-Power cumulative? For example, if I get three of them in play, can I take three fire energies out of my discard pile and attach them? A. That is correct. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. If I use Blaziken's "Firestarter" power do I still get to do my normal once-per-turn energy attachment? A. Sure. It does not replace your normal once-per-turn placement of Energy. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == HEALING WIND (Xatu - EX:Sandstorm) Q. If I have more than one Xatu in play, can I use each of their "Healing Wind" powers to remove multiple damage counters from my active Pokemon? A. Yes. Dangerous, but correct. Removing lots of damage is good. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == LUNAR ECLIPSE (Lunatone - EX:Sandstorm) Q. Lunatone's "Lunar Eclipse" power says "If Solrock is in play..." Does this count for ANY Solrock (yours or opponent's) or only your own? A. We're checking with Japan on this one. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) [A. Based on the wording I would say this counts for any Solrock in play, either yours or your opponents.] == POISON PAYBACK (Cacturne & Cacnea - EX:Sandstorm) Q. If a Pokemon's attack "places damage counters" on Cacturne or Cacnea, does it get to use its "Poison Payback" power or not? A. Damage counters are typically phrased that way to mean something other than damage. So, Poison Payback does not trigger on damage counters. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == RAIN DISH (Ludicolo, Lombre, & Lotad - EX:Sandstorm) Q. Ludicolo's Rain Dish Poke-BODY says "at any time between turns remove 1 damage counter...", so does this mean I can remove 1 damage counter more than once between turns? A. You are allowed to use its ability at any time between each players turn, but just once. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == SOLAR ECLIPSE (Solrock - EX:Sandstorm) Q. Solrock's "Solar Eclipse" power says "If Lunatone is in play..." Does this count for ANY Lunatone (yours or opponent's) or only your own? A. We're checking with Japan on this one. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) [A. Based on the wording I would say this counts for any Lunatone in play, either yours or your opponents.] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- POKEMON ATTACKS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == DARK BIND (Sableye - EX:Sandstorm) Q. If you discard a D energy from Sableye when using Dark Bind, does the attack get the Darkness Energy bonus damage? A. Sableye's Dark Bind attack has an optional discarding of Energy, therefore it takes place at the end of damage calculation. So you would indeed get to add the +10 damage for the Darkness Energy. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == DARK SLASH (Sharpedo - EX:Ruby/Sapphire) Q. For Sharpedo's "Dark Slash" attack, can I discard a Rainbow Energy as the Darkness requirement? A. Yes, you can discard a Rainbow Energy as the Darkness requirement. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. When you discard a Darkness Energy card from Sharpedo's "Dark Slash" attack, do I still get to add the +10 damage that the Darkness Energy card provides? A. Darkness Energy will only add 10 more damage for attacks by Darkness or Pokemon with Dark in their name, so Sharpedo will not receive this benefit, being Water type. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == INFLUENCE (Lileep - EX:Sandstorm) Q. Lileep's Influence. Can you search for more than 2? And if you do, what do you do with the extra ones? Keep them in your hand? A. You can only retreive up to 2 from your deck and put them onto your Bench. If you already have 4 Pokemon on your Bench, you may only retrieve one from your deck. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == JUDGEMENT (Dusclops - EX:Sandstorm) Q. Would Dusclops take damage from Claw Fossil's "Jagged Stone" Poke-BODY? A. No, there is no damage to trigger the effect. It's just KO'd. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == SAND SWIRL (Sandslash - EX:Sandstorm) Q. Does Sandslash's "Sand Swirl" attack prevent both defending Pokemon from retreating during the following turn? (NOTE: The plural of Pokemon is still "Pokemon".) A. Yes. Both Defending Pokemon would be affected by the inability to retreat. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == STRIKE AND RUN (Dunsparce - EX:Sandstorm) Q. Can I use Dunsparce's "Strike and Run" attack to search for baby Pokemon as well? A. Strike and Run can fetch Baby Pokemon, as they are considered Basic Pokemon. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. Can I use Dunsparce's "Strike and Run" attack to search for a Mysterious Fossil, Claw Fossil, or Root Fossil? A. Strike and Run cannot fetch Mysterious/Claw/Root Fossil Trainer cards, as they are only Pokemon when they are in play. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == TEAM ASSEMBLY (Kabuto & Omanyte - EX:Sandstorm) Q. Can I use Kabuto's or Omanyte's "Team Assembly" attack to search for baby Pokemon as well? A. Kabuto & Omanyte may search for Baby Pokemon, as they are considered Basic Pokemon. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. Can I use Kabuto's or Omanyte's "Team Assembly" attack to search for a Mysterious Fossil, Claw Fossil, or Root Fossil? A. They cannot search for Mysterious/Claw/Root Fossil Trainer cards, as they are only Pokemon when they are in play. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TRAINER CARDS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == LANETTE'S NET SEARCH (EX:Sandstorm) Q. Lanette's Net Search says to "search your deck for up to three different types of Basic Pokemon cards excluding Baby Pokemon". Does the phrase "Baby Pokemon" only refer to older babies (like Neo series), or does it also apply to newer cards with the "Baby Evolution" Poke-POWER on them? A. The new "Baby" Pokemon are written as Basic Pokemon. "Baby Pokemon" refers to older cards as they have been printed. Basics that have the PokePower "Baby Evolution" are Basics and not Baby Pokemon, even if other cards of the same name are considered Baby Pokemon. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == MYSTERIOUS FOSSIL (Fossil Expansion; Legendary Collection; EX:Sandstorm) Q. Can I evolve Lileep or Anorith from a Mysterious Fossil or not? A. No. Mysterious Fossil, Claw Fossil, and Root Fossil may not be freely interchanged to evolve into a different Pokemon than normally listed. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == RARE CANDY (EX:Sandstorm) Q. Can I use Rare Candy to place a Stage 2 onto a Basic Pokemon? A. You can use Rare Candy to evolve a Basic Pokemon into a Stage 1 or Stage 2. This essentially counts as your "Evolution" for that Pokemon that turn, although it's not restricted by the first turn the Pokemon is in play. The Stage 1 reference is because the card works on the turn the Basic is played (not 1st turn of the game though). (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. Can I use Rare Candy to evolve Pichu into Raichu EX? A. No, Rare Candy states if you have a card that "Evolves From" your Pokemon. Pikachu does not say that it "Evolves From" Pichu, so Rare Candy will not work in this situation. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. Can I use Rare Candy on the first turn of a game (when Pokemon are not normally allowed to evolve)? A. No. There is nothing in the card that allows it to break this rule. Nothing evolves on the first turn of the game! (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. Can I use Rare Candy on a Pokemon's first turn in play? For example, can I place down a Wurmple and then use Rare Candy on the same turn to evolve it into Dustox or Beautifly? A. Rare Candy doesn't allow you the first turn of the game, but it does allow you to evolve a Pokemon the first turn it is in play. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == WALLY'S TRAINING (EX:Sandstorm) Q. Can I use Wally's Training to place a Stage 2 onto a Basic Pokemon? A. No. Wally's Training does not work on making your Basic Pokemon into a Stage 2. It just pulls the next stage from the deck and you evolve to that. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. Can I use Wally's Training search for Pikachu when you have a Pichu active? A. No, Wally's Training states to search for a card that "Evolves From" your active Pokemon. Pikachu does not say that it "Evolves From" Pichu, so Wally's Training will not work in this situation. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. Can I use Wally's Training on the first turn of a game (when Pokemon are not normally allowed to evolve)? A. No. There is nothing in the card that allows it to break this rule. Nothing evolves on the first turn of the game! (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. Can I use Wally's Training on a Pokemon's first turn in play? For example, can I place down a Wurmple, make it active, and then use Wally's Training on the same turn to evolve it into Silcoon or Cascoon? A. Wally's Training doesn't allow you the first turn of the game, but it does allow you to evolve a Pokemon the first turn it is in play. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ENERGY CARDS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == DARKNESS ENERGY Q. I noticed that the wording of Darkness Energy has changed beginning with the TCG:EX Ruby/Sapphire expansion. Can you elaborate on this? A. Beginning with the TCG:EX Ruby/Sapphire expansion, the +10 extra damage for Darkness Energy is now applied *BEFORE* Weakness & Resistance rather than after W/R. Also, the extra benefits only apply if the Pokemon it's attached to is a Darkness type Pokemon or has the word "Dark" in the pokemon's name (i.e. "Dark Blastoise"). Finally, the -10 self-damage attribute has been removed; so if attached to a non-Dark Pokemon, it will no longer take any damage to itself as it did in previous expansions. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) == MULTI ENERGY (EX:Sandstorm) Q. The wording for Multi Energy is a bit confusing; does it mean that if I have Multi Energy already attached, and then I attach a special energy card, does the "rainbow effect" of Multi Energy disappear at that time? A. Yes. Multi Energy provides colorless energy when any other Special Energy card is present on the Pokemon. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. If I have one Multi Energy attached and then I attach a second one, do they cancel each other out and both become colorless? A. Yes, since they are both Special Energy cards, each one cancels out the other. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) Q. If I have Multi Energy and a special energy card both attached, and then I remove the special energy card (i.e. retreating, etc.), does the "rainbow effect" of Multi Energy then turn back on? A. Yes. It will provide the "rainbow" effect when it is the only Special Energy card on that Pokemon. (Sep 11, 2003 PUI Rules Team Meeting) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GENERAL GAMEPLAY ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == DECKS Q. Can you have 4 Electabuzz and 4 Electabuzz-EX in the same deck? A. Yes, you can play 4 Electabuzz and 4 Electabuzz EX in the same deck, as they are considered different cards (similar to the ruling for Trainer Pokemon).
