----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pokemon Chat Report - Thursday, August 31, 2000 by Ka-Lok Fung - Scrye Contributing Editor Log Verified by Pokemon61 - Associate Member of Team Compendium ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #20 from Chrisbo: Rocket Scyther's Shadow Images attack says that "this effect lasts until it takes damage". Does this include taking damage from Poison? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Yup." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #21 from Scrye_Fung: Regarding Rocket's Scyther Shadow Images. My opponent's Scyther does Shadow Images. I attack with an attack that reads [G] SomeKindaPoisonAttack 10. Flip a coin. If heads, the Defending Pokemon is now Poisoned. To resolve this correct, I would flip two coins. The first coin would determine if Scyther receives damage and the second coin would determine if Scyther is poisoned. Is this correct? Furthermore, for the first coin, if I flipped heads, would this end Shadow Images effect; if tails, it would continue Shadow Images effect. Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Right as long as you are counting that second coin flip as the one of the effect of the poison attack. Shadow Images does NOT prevent attack effects so you would not flip for it for the Poison. Once the Poison does its damage at the end of the turn, the Shadow Image effect is gone." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #22 from Chrisbo: If your opponent successfully used Tickling Machine and on your turn you draw an Oak & play it, do you have to discard the cards that were set aside ordo you get to keep them since they're currently considered "out of play"? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "You do not touch them. So you could play Oak without discarding the "out of play" hand of cards." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #23 from Mr_mystery: Any info from R&D about the Karp/Fable thing? I still STILL say you can't evolve :P Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Say whatever you want, the answer has already been given. It will stay that way until the next major rules update (meaning if we get Neo)." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #24 from Chrisbo: Sorry, yet another Ditto question... What if Ditto were copying Magneton's SelfDestruct attack and it hits Erika's Dratini on the bench? For the purposes of "Strange Barrier", is Ditto considered a Basic pokemon or an Evolved pokemon at that time? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Good question, as far as I can tell, Ditto counts aswhatever it is a copy of so it would NOT count as a basic Pokemon in this sense. I will verify this one though." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #27 from Scrye_Fung: On Rocket's Hitmonchan and Mr. Mime's Meditate. My opponent's Rocket's Hitmonchan (with 20 damage) uses Crosscounter. I activate Mr. Mime. Meditate does 60 damage to to Hitmonchan (Mediate initially does 30 but with Weakness it gets doubled to 60). Now my opponent flips heads, therefore Crosscounter counters with a 120 hit (Hitmonchan received 60 damage so Crosscounters returns double that - 120). My Mr. Mime blocks it with the Invisible Wall and Rocket's Hitmonchan is KO'd. Is this scenairo correct? If not, please explain. Master_Trainer_Mike says, "That sounds correct." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #29 from Rainbow_Trainer: Multiple Dodrio's on your bench... does the retreat aid multiply with the quantity of Dodrio's?? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Yes it does." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #32 from Scrye_Fung: Ancient Mew is the nickname for a card just like Movie Promo Mewtwo is a nickname for a card. Why is this card considered different from Mew and you'reallowed to have four of each (Ancient Mew and Mew) in a deck? After all, there are only 3 symbols on top of the Ancient Mew card which should indicate the wordMew. In fact, I'll like you to direct this question to Creatures, Inc. for a definitive answer. Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Guys, for the last time, this is NOT a legal card (its not in English). You will not be allowed to use it in a sanctioned event or in League play. R&D called it Ancient Mew, but since it will ONLY be used in frtiendly game play, you can ultimately decide for yourself." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #36 from Scrye_Fung: Ok .. now that Ancient Mew is banned from tournament play why is it still being allowed @ the DCI-sanctioned East Coast STS? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "It isn't." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #38 from Scrye_Fung: Regarding Tickling Machine and Professor Oak. Say you played Tickling Machine and flipped heads. My opponent has set aside her cards. She draws and plays a Professor Oak. Does she need to discard the set aside cards? I would say nobecause those cards set aside are out of play until my opponent's subsequent turn. Can you please explain? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "As I said, you could play the Oak without discardig your hand as they are out of play." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #39 from Scrye_Fung: When you use Misty's Staryu's Swift, do you still have to flip for Sand-attack? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Any effect that PREVENTS attacks must still be checked. Swift (if allowed ot go off) basically ignores anything that tries to effect the amount of damage done." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #48 from soslowpoke: if I use Teash Exchange does it get shuffked back into my deck? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Nope." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #69 from EEVEE2001: What happens if a confused Dark Wartortle successfully uses Mirror Shell, then the opponent attacks? Does Wartortle have to flip for confusion on mirror shell's recoil? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Nope, Confusion attack checks only on your turn." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #71 from Chrisbo: Since you've ruled that poison cancels Rocket Scyther's Shadow Images attack, if it were already poisoned before doing the attack, the effect would endimmediately at the end of Rocket Scyther's turn when the poison damage kicks in, right? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Correct." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #73 from Mario101: people say scyther does 60 damage even when retreated on bench then putit on active since it says, scythers swords dance does 60 instead of 30 the next turn, is that true? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Not true, benching ends all attack effects." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #74 from lugia_2001: Can there be a rule where if you draw your starting hand and you use all the cards, can you draw 7 more or something like that. Like there is in Magic. Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Hmmm, talk about BROKEN!!!" Master_Trainer_Mike says, "ummmm.....Mike Elliot says NO" Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #76 from PokemonMstr55: question Say you are using a Golduck and you use his Psybeam would this be a psychic or water attack? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Water attack as Psyduck is a water Pokemon" Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #77 from Meowth52: Say I have 5 cards in my deck and my opponent has 5. I have a Pokemon Trader and a Pokemon in my hand. I use Pkmn Trader and I see a pokemon, but I say I don't, and leave the Pokemon I traded in the deck, adding the extra card... Is this legal? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Nooooolo!!!" Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #78 from Meowth52: Since Ditto's Pokemon Power says he is an exact duplicate of the defending pokemon, including weakness, resistance, and so on, then does that mean he is immune to Porygon's conversion as long as his power is on? The Pokemon Power says his weakness must be the same as the defending Pokemon's. Master_Trainer_Mike says, "He is not immune to Porygons effect. Transform is NOT continuous but triggered whenever it faces a new Pokemon." Master_Trainer_Mike says, "So, if the Ditto is benched it is of course removed. If a different Pokemon is brought up opposite Ditto, the Porygon change effectis STILL there (Transform does ZNOT remove it) EXCEPT in the case where the new Pokemon that Ditto Transforms into does NOT have a Weakness, then the Porygon effect would not have a Weakness to effect and it would disappear." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #79 from seatomcat: Previous rulings said that Tentacool's PP Cowardice could not be used more than once on the same turn (2/10 Chat) yet Mankey's PP Peek could be if Scooped Up (Jungle FAQ). Why the difference? Thank you for answering. Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Tentacool says its Cowardice cannot be used the turn it comes into play, and Mankey's Peek does not." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #82 from Tyais: Look at the East STS rules. They say it (Ancient Mew) is legal. You need some reversing here. Master_Trainer_Mike says, "It will be updated soon, thanks for the point out." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #83 from Scott_Gerhardt: I have a Rocket Hitmonchan that used Crosscounter. You have an Erika'sVileplume with zero damage counters on it. The Vileplume attacks. Then you get heads on crosscounter. Will the Vileplume be able to remove those damage counters applied from C Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Yes you will." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #84 from Pkmn61: Does Rocket's Hitmonchan's CrossCounter attack apply weakness/resistance? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Yes it does." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #85 from soslowpoke: If I use Misty's Staru's Swift attack and I attatch PLus Powers, will it go through invisible wall? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "The Swift attack ignores Invisible Wall regardless of the Pluspower being added on." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #88 from seatomcat: Please confirm that if Muk is played, PP Toxic Gas will shut down/not allow Eevee to use PP Chain Reaction. I've heard some argue that Chain Reaction is a response to evolving from Grimer to Muk so it takes effect before Muk's Toxic Gas does. Thank yo Master_Trainer_Mike says, "There are no triggered effects. As soon as the Muk hits it shuts off all Pokemon Powers." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #92 from Supra: does omanyte/kabuto/aerodactyl count as a basic pkmn?or doe sit hav to evolve from mysterious fossil? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "They are all Stage 1 Pokmeon." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #95 from Supra: for Charity, it says"unless this pokemon get's knocked out" does that mean your active or the defending pkmn? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "The oine you attached it to, your ACTIVE Pokemon." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #97 from Tyais: Refrencing previous rulings about Butterfree's Mega Drain. People intepret Mega Drain as removing the number of damage counters equal to half the damage meaning removing 20 damage counters, but as was kindly pointed out to me, it SHOULD interpreted as an equation meaning you take the number of damage counters off equall to half the damage. 20 damage is equal to 2 damage counters. Just for refernce, this is correct? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Its in our bad template file." Master_Trainer_Mike says, "You remove the number of damage counters that represent hald of the damage done. You are correct." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #110 from JoshmanWing: If TR Hitmonchan is put to sleep during the opponant's turn (either by the Sleep card or Drowzee), but used Cross Counter the previous turn, would it still use CrossCounter if attacked? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Yes it would." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #111 from Scott_Gerhardt: Based on the Rocket Moltres/Dark Gyarados ruling, how does that affect the old Ditto ruling. I.E. Venonat attacks Ditto with 3 damage counters on it. If Venomat got heads for paralysis, Ditto would live as it was paralyzed. Is this a reversal of t Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Ditto would NOT live. It would have received 40 damage BEFORE it was paralyzed and loses its Transform ability. When a Pokemon gets sufficient damage assigned to it to Knock it out it will be Knocked out." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #112 from Supra: if i had no cards in my deck , can i still use nightly garbage run? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Sure." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #114 from Scott_Gerhardt: Re: Question #77, what stops this from happening? How can it be proved? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "First of all it is out and out cheating. Hopefully someone who plays in a tournament is there to compete FAIRLY, if not, then we don't want anything to do with them." Master_Trainer_Mike says, "If you feel that someone cheated this way, you call over a judge and it would most likely mean amatch loss." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #116 from rob_cat_pz: Let me put a scenario for you- Charizard vs a Ditto, its the Dittos turn. Can it use recall to copy an attack on Charmeleon cause its the Pokemon before it? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "No." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #120 from Scrye_Fung: Rererring to Q118, Transform IS CONTINUOUS when he's Active correct (unless Paralyzed, Confused, Asleep)? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Not in that particular case (R&D was standing right behind me on that one)." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #121 from Meowth52: About my Ditto question, you said "He is not immune to Porygons effect. Transform is NOT continuous but triggered whenever it faces a new Pokemon." but Ditto's power says "as long as Ditto is your active Pokemon" If what you're telling me is correct, then energy attached to Ditto doesn't become "rainboww" until he faces a new pokemon? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Stop trying to twist the logic gang,." Master_Trainer_Mike says, "The answer I gave you is from R&D, I wouldn't try toapply it to ANY OTHER scenarios." Master_Trainer_Mike says, "(geez)." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #122 from Scott_Gerhardt: About the Ditto/Porygon question, Transform is going to trigger when a new Pokemon is brought up, overwriting what is presently there. The first half is right, but the second half isn't. Master_Trainer_Mike says, "enough said......" Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #123 from Articjedi: When a pokemon is put to sleep who flips the coin at the end of the turn, I have ased this question a hundred times now? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "The person who's Pokemon is asleep. Congrats on thehundreth time, maybe Ripley's can put you next to te guy wth the really long fingernails." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #124 from Supra: for Lt. Surge's voltorb spin ball, why didn't u just word it "flip a coin , if tails this attack does nothing"? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Its just a template." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #126 from CrystalMew: Can you play more than one Sabrina's ESP on a Sabrina's Pokemon? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Sure." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #127 from Scott_Gerhardt: Could you please explain the timing on the Hitmonchan / Vileplume ruling. It would completely seem that the damage from Vileplume was done and over with before crosscounter can attack back. Master_Trainer_Mike says, "All other effects from attacks are done AFTER damageis assigned. The Rocket's Hitmonchan's return damage loops back in the attacksequence BEFORE you get to the last step where all other effects from attacks are resolved. So the damage would already be assigned to the Vileplume before the attacks other effect resolves." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #129 from CrystalMew: If I have a Dark Gyarados out with 10 HP left on a Rocket Magikarp. If I play Recall can I use Rapid Evolution to evolve into Gyarados so I can stay alive longer? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Dunno, I will ask R&D again........" Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #131 from seatomcat: Will Misty's Staryu's Swift w/two PlusPowers knock out Mr. Mime? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Yup." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #132 from Tyais: RE:Question 83 - As clarification, if I use Erika's Vileplume (no damage on it) attack for GGG (Mega Drain or something like it....), and then Rocket'sHitmonchan's Crosscounter kicks in, do I remove damage still? It would seem like that you would do all of Erika's Vileplume attack (including effects) before Crosscounter would kick in. Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Gang!!! R&D gave you the ruling ok???" Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #141 from Scott_Gerhardt: Pg 21 of the rules: "In What ORder Do You Do Your Attack" f) "....Do any damage first, then do any other effects, and finally, KO any Pokemon with damage greater than or equal to their HP". Is the rulebook wrong? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Yup, that is a just a basic explanation, look on How do you figure out damage area for the specifics." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #146 from Supra: can you attack on first turn?alot of my friends say you can't and otherppl say u can and i'm getting really confused Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Yes you can attack on the first turn, you cannot Evolve on it though." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #148 from Articjedi: In the game boy TCG the card shuffled in with pokemon trader appears at the top of the deck when searching for the second card Master_Trainer_Mike says, "The Pokemon ETCG is wrong is so many ways....." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #154 from CrystalMew: Durring a game is it legal to count your Discard pile? Is it also legalto count your deck as long as you do not look at the cards front? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Sure, though if you do it too often during a timed tournament it could be deemed stalling." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #163 from Nikachu3: Could you have 5 Squirtle in your deck as long as they have different levels? Rocket and Base set Squirtles have different levels... Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Nope, only 4 of the same named Pokemon max." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #165 from Scott_Gerhardt: "How Do You Figure Out the Damage" makes no reference to knocking out Pokemon, but merely how damage is actually figured out. The Expert rules are disagreeing with your ruling where it DOES mention knocking out. Master_Trainer_Mike says, "lalalalalalalala I can't hear you!!!" Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Ok Scott and everyone else, once again I wil say that this is a japanese card game with weak game balance thta is then translated toa very different language with very different meanings. Since we do not own the game, we CANNOT fix the cards before these sorts of issues arise. We do the best we can with this scenario. Unfortunately there are many inconsistencies intheir game and the translation templates. Your best bet is to understand that and take the rulings as given and to notnecessarily apply the logic from one ruling to another one." Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Sorry it can get confusing, we are working on tryingto be more involved with the front end design for future sets." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #166 from JoshmanWing: Is it illegal to randomly shuffle your deck, and if yes what are the penalties from doing so? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Yes it is illegal. The penalties depend on the tournament rules." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #175 from darkweedle2000: If a ditto transformed into a snorlax, and it was confused, would it change back into ditto or would it stay snorlax because of thick skinned? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "If the Ditto was already confused it could not Tranform into Snorlax, if it Transformed into Snoirlax it could not be confused." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #183 from Articjedi: Is there any penalty for accidently seeing your opponents hand? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "As long as you both agree it was accidental, then no." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #184 from FireBlAsToIsE: if u don't draw basics in your hand 3 times in a row, do u lose automatically?? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "No." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #192 from soslowpoke: do I only need 1 Rainbow Energy to use both of Sabrina's Venomoht's attacks? (BTW: what is promo 19?) Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Yup that would work." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #240 from porygon_maniac17: does Defender take away the effects of the 10 damage from rainbow NRG? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "No, that is not damage caused by an attack." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #241 from Eprise1701e: if a buzzapped electrode is returned to your hand, would it still be considered an energy card, or would it revert back to a Pokemon card? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "It would revert." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #247 from Nikachu3: Say I use Movie Promo Mewtwo and Absorb up Rainbow Energy, does Mewtwo get damaged? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Nope, it only damages when played form your hand." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #250 from porygon_maniac17: If a Dark Jolteon used Lightning Flash causing the defending pokemon tobe knocked out, would the effect go on the next defender? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "No it wouldn't." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #251 from Meowth52: About that promo Dark Persion misprint... The text is slightly changedfrom the rocket version. The rocket version says at the end, "This attack can't be used if your opponent has no benched pokemon," therefore making your opponent having benched pokemon being a "requirement" for the attack, thus allowing you to metronome it, choose a Pokemon from you're opponent's discard pile, then put it on the bench, the Fascinate right on up there! (Provided when you Metronome your opponent has no benched pokemon). You may not plead the 5th. Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Nope thats not it." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #258 from Mario101: if promo mewtwo absorbs a full heal energy, does poison get off? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Nope, its fullheal efect only works from your hand." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #285 from rob_cat_pz: Magikarp does ten damage right?(anything to stop u from singing) Master_Trainer_Mike says, "Right!" Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #305 from WizO_Pikapi: Is it legal in a game to make a deck of nothing but energy and deck your opponent. Master_Trainer_Mike says, "No, as your opponent does not have to take 2 additional cards. If the game never starts, you can lose due to stalling." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #332 from Turonik: if gastly uses lick and KOs the other pokemon, does your oppenet bring out another pokemon and then you do the status effect? Master_Trainer_Mike says, "No, a Pokemon is SLATED to be removed when it has sufficient damage assigned to it. Attack effects resolve BEFORE a replacemnt Pokemon is brought up." Master_Trainer_Mike presents the speaker with question #344 from Articjedi: Does Gyarados do Final Beam if it is paralyzed Master_Trainer_Mike says, "if it is already paralyzed no, if the attack tat knocks it out ALSO paralyzes then yes."
