If I use Dark Dragonair's Evolutionary Light, do I have to pick an Evolution card out if there's any or I don't have to (even I know there are Evolution cards in the deck) and just use it to see what cards are in the deck? A. No, you MUST choose one if there is ONE but you can use the power to search your deck even if there is NOT any evolution cards. (Apr 5, 2001 WotC Chat, Q99 & Q165) == TRANSFORM (Ditto - Fossil Expansion) // Ditto and Energy Q. Can you change the energy type on Ditto if after it pays an attack cost but before a penalty hits, like for Electroburn? A. Not work. Can't do anything in the middle of an attack. Now you guys are just being silly..... (Apr 5, 2001 WotC Chat, Q182 & Q183) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- POKEMON ATTACKS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == SHADOW IMAGES (Rocket's Scyther - Gym: Heroes Expansion) Q. There's currently an old ruling that Rocket Syther’s Shadow Images is ended by Poison damage even though it is a damage counter placement and does not "do damage". Is this still in effect or has it been superseded by the Neo rules? A. That question is on its way back to Japan for clarification. You are right in that by the rules it should NOT end it (placing a counter instead of actually doing damage) BUT we also have a ruling from Japan saying it DOES end it. We are waiting on clarificiation, but we will rule for now that it does NOT end it. (Mar 29, 2001 WotC Chat, Q8; Apr 5, 2001 WotC Chat, Q14) ***** PREVIOUS RULING: THIS ONE HAS SINCE BEEN OVERRULED; See Above ***** Q. Rocket Scyther's Shadow Images attack says that "this effect lasts until it takes damage". Does this include taking damage from Poison? A. Yup. (Aug 31, 2000 WotC Chat Q20) ***** PREVIOUS RULING: THIS ONE HAS SINCE BEEN OVERRULED; See Above ***** Q. Since Poison cancels Rocket Scyther's Shadow Images attack, if the Defending Pokémon was already Poisoned before doing the attack, the effect would end immediately at the end of Rocket Scyther's turn when the poison damage kicks in, right? A. Correct. (Aug 31, 2000 WotC Chat, Q71) ***** PREVIOUS RULING: THIS FINAL SENTENCE IN THE ANSWER HAS SINCE BEEN OVERRULED; See Above ***** Q. Regarding Rocket's Scyther Shadow Images. My opponent's Scyther does Shadow Images. I attack with an attack that reads [G] SomeKindaPoisonAttack 10. Flip a coin. If heads, the Defending Pokémon is now Poisoned. To resolve this correct, I would flip two coins. The first coin would determine if Scyther receives damage and the second coin would determine if Scyther is poisoned. Is this correct? Furthermore, for the first coin, if I flipped heads, would this end Shadow Images effect; if tails, it would continue Shadow Images effect? A. Right as long as you are counting that second coin flip as the one of the effect of the Poison attack. Shadow Images does NOT prevent attack effects so you would not flip for it for the Poison. Once the Poison does its damage at the end of the turn, the Shadow Image effect is gone. (Aug 31, 2000 WotC Chat Q21) Q. How do other "counter placing" effects [other than Poison] affect Shadow Images? Which of these can end the effect: Damage Swap? Life Down, Juxtapose and other counter placing attacks? Darkness Energy self-damage? Char? Gengar’s Curse? A. Currently none of them do. (Mar 29, 2001 WotC Chat, Q9) == SMOKESCREEN (Magmar - Fossil Expansion) Q. If your Pokémon has been Smokescreened on the previous turn, and you choose an attack that requires you to do something (such as discarding Energy) in order to use the Attack, do you pay the attack costs before you flip for the Smokescreen Effect? A. Yes before, you still attempt the attack; the Smokescreen might just stop it from having any effect. (Apr 13, 2000 WotC Chat, Q20; Apr 5, 2001 WotC Chat, Q27) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TRAINER CARDS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == CHALLENGE! (Team Rocket Expansion) Q. Can I play the Challenge! trainer card even if my own bench is already full? What would happen if I can? A. You can still play it. But if your opponent accepts the challenge and your bench is full he gets to dig and you don't. (Apr 5, 2001 WotC Chat, Q195) == NO REMOVAL GYM (Gym: Heroes Expansion) Q. If No Removal Gym is in play and a Slowking is on the opponent's bench, if I choose to use Energy Removal do I still have to pay the two-card penalty even if the flip for Mind Games is heads and the E.R. goes on top of my deck? A. You only pay the addditional cost if you actually play the trainer. (Apr 5, 2001 WotC Chat, Q196) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ENERGY CARDS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == ENERGY CARDS IN GENERAL Q. For rulings sake, can we say that you must determine the type of energy an energy card provides during the main phase of play (the Pokemon Powers, Retreat, etc. part) of play and can be switched at any time? [Ed.Note: Specifically with regards to Ditto's "Transform" power that affects energy types] A. There is no such thing as a "main phase" in Pokemon. You cannot change it during the attack sequence is the easiest way to rule it.
