Can you evolve a baby pokemon into it's "basic" form if Aerodactyl's "Prehistoric Power" is in play? It says "no more Evolution cards can be played", but basics like Clefairy are not evolutions, are they? A. If you are attempting to play it on a baby Pokemon then it is an evolution card and cannot be played in this instance. If you simply put it on the bench then it is NOT an evolution card and can be played. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q14b) == SHOCK BLAST (Lt. Surge's Electrode - Gym: Challenge Expansion) Q. If your opponent has 3 Forretress in play, and you make Lt. Surge's Electrode active. Is each Spike damage flipped separately for possible Shock Blast? A. You would check for each damage amount done. [Ed.Note: In other words, for each individual "Spikes" damage being done, you would flip for a Shock Blast check]. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q63) == SPIKES (Forretress - Neo: Discovery Expansion) Q. Can Forretress' Spikes power be used multiple times during a turn if the opponent retreats more than once? A. Yes. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q19) Q. Does Forretress' Spikes power come into affect when your opponent attacks with Dark Alakazam's Teleport Blast? If so, which pokemon takes the Spikes? Dark Alakazam or the one that replaces it? A. Yes it would. The one that was switched up from the bench would take the damage. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, after-Q19) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- POKEMON ATTACKS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == COUNTER (Wobbuffet - Neo: Discovery Expansion) Q. If Wobbuffet used Counter last turn, and a Pokemon with Plus Powers attached attacks Wobbuffet, do the Plus Powers apply when figuring out Wobbuffet's recoil damage from Counter? A. Yes, it would. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q18) == EEEEEEEK (Cleffa - Neo: Genesis Expansion) Q. If you announce I am Eeeeeeeking, can my opponent draw his card as if it was the start of his turn before I draw my 7 cards? A. Technically your opponent should wait until you draw the 7 cards. However since you are unable to play any of them since your turn is over, this is a pretty minor rules violation and would normally just get a warning to not do it again. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q5a) == FEINT ATTACK (Murkrow - Neo: Genesis Expansion, Umbreon - Neo: Discovery Expansion) Q. Would Murkrow's Feint Attack ignore Unown-D's Power if Unown-D was: a) Your Active Pokemon? b) On the Bench? A. It would ignore it if Unown-D was the Active, would not if it was on the bench. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q9a) Q. With an Unown-D (Darkness) as the opponent's active, if Umbreon tries to use Feint Attack against a benched pokemon, will the damage be prevented or not? Feint Attack says, "this attack's damage isn't affected by ... or Powers on the *Defending* Pokemon". A. That means EFFECTS from attacks or powers do not affect the damage amount, NOT actual powers FROM the defending. So in ALL cases Feint does NOT ignore effects on benched Pokemon, regardless of their origin. It does not matter whether the defending Pokemon OR a benched Pokemon is Unown D in this case. If you are attacking the defending Unown D, then of course, Feint will ignore any effects trying to reduce the damage. Just because the Unown D is the Active, its power is NOT shut off or ignored when you attack a benched Pokemon (with Umbreon's Feint). (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q14a & Q1b) == HATCH (Metapod - Neo: Discovery Expansion) Q. Metapod's Hatch attack: If you have no Butterfrees in the deck, can you still use the attack (Remove the damage, search your deck, get nothing from your deck)? A. Yes. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q74) == PURSUIT (Umbreon - Neo: Discovery Expansion) Q. The text for Pursuit says "if the Defending Pokemon *tries* to retreat". But last week (Q38) you said that Pursuit damage to a confused Pokemon who attempts to retreat only happens if the confusion flip is successful. Are you sure about that? A. Sorry. You are correct in that it is the ATTEMPT to retreat that triggers Pursuit, whether it is a succesful retreat (due to confusion) or not. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q16 & Q70) ***** PREVIOUS RULING: THIS ONE HAS SINCE BEEN OVERRULED; See Above ***** Q. If a confused pokemon tries to retreat after an Umbreon attacks it with Pursuit, does it take the +10 damage from Pursuit regardless of whether the flip for confusion is heads or tails? Or does it not take the Pursuit damage if the confusion flip is tails? A. No, it will only take the pursuit damage if it actually retreats. (Jun 7, 2001 WotC Chat, Q38) == WORK TOGETHER (Kabuto - Neo: Discovery Expansion) Q. Kabuto's Work Together attack: If you flip tails, does it still do 10 damage? Or does it do nothing? (Card does not say) A. If tails, it just does 10. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q77) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UNOWN CARDS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TRAINER CARDS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == BLAINE'S QUIZ #1, #2, and #3 (Gym: Heroes & Gym: Challenge Expansions) Q. For the "Blaine's Quizzes", if the face-down card is an Unown pokemon does the opponent have to guess the full name (i.e. "Unown-A") or can they just say "Unown"? Who gets to draw three cards? A. You do, as the other player didn't give the full name. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q54 & Q69 & Q97) == CHAOS GYM (Gym: Challenge Expansion) [see also Pokemon Power: "Mind Games"] Q. My opponent has a Slowking and there's a Chaos Gym in play. He plays for example Professor Elm and he flips tails. I decide to use it and he uses Slowking's pokemon power and flips heads what happens? A. Ok, if this is the scenario, your opponent playing Elm and losing it to Chaos Gym and you then using it would NOT allow him to do the Slowking flip. Slowking only allows the flip when you PLAY a trainer, NOT use one. There is a difference. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q81) Q. What is "playing" a trainer and "using" one. Give me an example (this is for slowking) [and Chaos Gym]. A. If your opponent attempts to _play_ a trainer when Chaos Gym is out and flips tails that player can't play that card. You may _use_ that card instead. That's how Chaos Gym is worded. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q103) == DEVOLUTION SPRAY (Base Set) / HYPER DEVOLUTION SPRAY (Neo: Discovery Expansion) Q. If you use Hyper Devolution Spray on a Pokemon that is Poisoned, Confused, Paralyzed or Asleep, will those effects be removed? (Hyper Devolution Spray does not have the "Full Heal" text that was on the original.) A. Yes. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q7a & Q117) Q. When you use Hyper Devolution Spray does the effect of not evolving affect all of your pokemon or only the one that you used it on? A. Only the one you used it on. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q101) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ENERGY CARDS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == DARKNESS & METAL ENERGY (Neo: Genesis Expansion) Q. Does the +10 damage from Darkness energy get applied if a Pokemon Power (like Elekid's Playful Punch or Dark Gyarados' Final Beam) damages the opponent? A. The extra damage will only be applied to _attacks_. Some Pokemon Powers say that they attack the active back (like R. Hitmochan), in that case it will. It won't be applied to Playful Punch damage. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q15b) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GENERAL GAMEPLAY ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == ATTACKING Q. During your opponent's turn, if you used Counter, Crosscounter, etc. do you follow every step in the attack phase (Including relevant trainers, other powers, confusion checks, etc.)? This is to clarify debate over these types of attacks. A. If it is an attack, you must go through the sequence. If it just does damage, you do not. (Jun 14, 2001 WotC Chat, Q83) == CARDS IN GENERAL Q. Can people have more then one card in a sleeve, I have caught people trying to cheat this way. Will you get DQ'ed for it ? A. Having 2 cards in a sleeve counts as a marked card. There are rules and punishments for this infraction listed on the tournament floor rules.
