There are currently some conflicting rulings regarding whether Metal Energy on Brock's Rhydon would prevent damage transferred to it via "Bench Guard" (specifically with regards to Erika's Dratini). Please explain and elaborate. Thanks. A. The Bench Guard Pokemon power takes place in step (H) well after attached energy effects are resolved (step G). So while you can move damage that would have hit a benched Pokemon to Brock's Rhydon, if Metal energy is attached to Brock's Rhydon, it would NOT reduce that moved damage to zero. (Feb 22, 2001 WotC Chat, Q143; Sep 20, 2001 WotC Chat, Q2) ***** PREVIOUS RULING: THIS ONE HAS SINCE BEEN OVERRULED; See Above ***** Q. You have a Brock's Rhydon (with a Metal attached) on the Bench with Erika's Dratini. A bench attack does 30 damage to Dratini. You use Bench Guard. How much damage, if any, is done to Dratini or Rhydon? A. Well, as long has the pokemon attacking the bench is a basic, then it would reduce the damage to 0, (moved to rhydon, and reduced by 10) if that is what you are asking. (Sep 13, 2001 WotC Chat, Q127) == FORTITUDE (Giovanni's Machamp - Gym: Challenge Expansion) Q. If I use Igglybuff's Gaze on a Giovanni's Machamp and knock it out, would it be knocked out or would it be able to flip for Fortitude? A. Well, it wouldn't [be able to flip, that is], but realize that you're going to have to KO Giovanni's Machamp when it's still on the bench. (Sep 20, 2001 WotC Chat, Q19) == GAZE (Igglybuff - Neo: Discovery Expansion) Q. Igglybuff does Gaze on Slowking, then Igglybuff leaves play; is Slowkings PP still turned off?? A. The Gaze Power 'sits' on the Pokemon that it targeted unless that Pokemon leaves the bench. Nothing happens if Igglybuff leaves play. (Sep 20, 2001 WotC Chat, Q13) Q1. Igglybuff does Gaze, is Scooped up and placed on the bench again (all in one turn); it can now turn off _another_ Pokemon Power, right? A1. Wrong. You would NOT be able to use the power again that turn, regardless..... (Sep 20, 2001 WotC Chat, Q25 & Q30) Q2. But if you played a new Igglybuff while the first was in play both of them could Gaze; so what if you switch Igglys could you Gaze with the second? How would your opponent know if you switched Igglys or not? There is no proof that the Igglybuff that you play after you Scoop Up isn't another Igglybuff because your opponent cannot look at your hand. A2. You would have to prove that it was a second Igglybuff you were bringing into play (show the other one in your hand). (Sep 20, 2001 WotC Chat, Q29 & Q35) == STRANGE BARRIER (Erika's Dratini - Gym: Heroes Expansion) Q. If a player has Unown-D (or -M, or -N) on the bench and their Erika's Dratini gets attacked, does the Unown's Pokwmon Power take precedence or would the player get to choose which of the Pokemon Powers would activate first? A. The player would get to choose the order of the Pokemon powers taking place. == TRANSFORM (Ditto - Fossil Expansion) // Brock's Ninetales' Shapeshift [CHRISBO NOTE: Update to existing rule] Q. If Ditto is opposite a Brock's Ninetales which has used Shapeshift to turn into Clefable, is Ditto a Clefable or a Brock's Ninetales? Some people claim that Ditto opposite Brock's Ninetales is to be treated as the Ninetales regardless of whether an evolution card is attached to it or not. Others say that it is to be treated as the attached evolution card. Which way is correct? A. Here's the deal with Ditto and Brock's Ninetales: When Ditto is opposite Brock's Ninetales and Brock's Ninetales has a Pokemon attached to it (that it has Shapeshifted into) Ditto _only_ copies the Brock's Ninetales, _not_ the Pokemon that it has Shapeshifted into. It is to be treated as Brock's Ninetales, not the attached evolution. (Oct 19, 2000 WotC Chat, Q62; Nov 2, 2000 WotC Chat Announcements; Sep 20, 2001 WotC Chat, Q78) [Ed Note: The reason that Ditto is Brock's Ninetales and not the Pokémon Brock's Ninetales is being treated as is because Ditto's transform says to copy the "card" of the Active Pokémon, not the "Active Pokémon". // Knocking Out Ditto Q. Scenario: My opponent has a Ditto with 40 damage and [attaches] a Gold Berry. My opponent attacks and knocks out my [active] Scyther. I bring up a Koga's Weedle (40 HP). Is Ditto knocked out (e.g. I replace my pokemon on my OPPONENT'S turn) or does the Gold Berry save it (e.g. I replace the Scyther BETWEEN TURNS)? A. Replacing a knocked out Active Pokemon takes place during the turn, BEFORE a Gold Berry goes off between turns. So in this case, the Ditto is knocked out. SURGE'S SECRET PLAN (Gym: Challenge Expansion) Q. Last November you said that if you GOW a card laid down by LSSP, "it stays face down until it is attacked or attempts to attack". But in the WotC Rulings Document, the same question is answered that GOW triggers the "need to know" clause. Which is it? And would you *have* to pick a pokemon to GOW if the opponent's LSSP'd card is not a basic pokemon? A. OK, LSSP says you must flip the card over if you ever need to verify what it is. Gust of Wind says to Choose 1 of your opponent's Benched POKEMON. So you MUST prove that it is a Pokemon for that Trainer card, thus it is flipped over. Yes you would have to pick; you played the trainer. You couldn't change your mind if it was a Pokemon, you could pick a Pokemon if it wasn't. (Sep 20, 2001 WotC Chat, Q81 & Q87 & Q97) ***** PREVIOUS RULING: THIS ONE HAS SINCE BEEN OVERRULED; See Above ***** Q. If a player puts an energy face-down with Lt. Surge's Secret Plan, and then the other player uses Gust of Wind to make it the active, what happens? A. It stays face down until it is attacked or attempts to attack. (Nov 30, 2000 WotC Chat, Q197) Q. So basically, the only way a LSSP'd card is treated like a Pokemon is for the purposes of attaching energy & tools and such. Can you think of any other ways besides those two? A. Well actually, since an LSSP'd card is NOT checked for GAME STATUS effects, you COULD still be in a game if your opponent knocked out all of your other Pokemon except for an LSSP'd card. Of course, this would only save you the one turn....
