So only attacks that do damage (not "place counters") would cause Buffer to be invoked. (Apr 5, 2005 PUI Announcements; Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) == CLAW FOSSIL (EX:Sandstorm) [See also "ROOT FOSSIL" and "MYSTERIOUS FOSSIL"] * While in play, Mysterious Fossil, Claw Fossil, and Root Fossil, count as both Trainer cards and as Pokemon. Previous rulings did not consider them to be "Trainer cards" while in play. (Apr 5, 2005 PUI Announcements; Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) == MYSTERIOUS FOSSIL (Fossil Expansion; Legendary Collection; EX:Sandstorm) * While in play, Mysterious Fossil, Claw Fossil, and Root Fossil, count as both Trainer cards and as Pokemon. So only attacks that do damage (not "place counters") would cause Buffer to be invoked. (Apr 5, 2005 PUI Announcements; Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) Q. Say TRR Skiploom has 50 damage on it and the opponent uses ATM-Rock to devolve Skiploom back to Hoppip. Would Hoppip's "Buffer" Poke-BODY come into play in a situation like this? A. No, Buffer only works when damage is done to a Pokemon; devolving does not cause Buffer to be invoked, and the Hoppip would be knocked out because there are too many damage counters on it. (Dec 2, 2004 PUI Rules Team; Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) ***** PREVIOUS RULING: THIS ONE HAS BEEN FURTHER CLARIFIED; See Above ***** Q. Say TRR Skiploom has 50 damage on it and the opponent uses ATM-Rock to devolve Skiploom back to Hoppip. Would Hoppip's "Buffer" Poke-BODY come into play in a situation like this? A. No, Hoppip would be knocked out if there were too many damage counters on it. (Dec 2, 2004 PUI Rules Team) Q. If a Rocket's Mewtwo-EX has 9 damage counters on it and uses "Darkness Switch" against Jumpluff (Buffer), would that trigger "Buffer"? A. No, because Darkness Switch is moving counters, not doing damage. (Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) Q. Is the "Buffer" Poke-BODY activated by "Swift" attacks or when Hidden Legends Electrode uses the "Mass Destruction" attack which knocks out both Pokemon? A. "Yes" for Swift because the damage is still being done, which in turn THEN causes Buffer to invoke. But "No" for Mass Destruction, because no damage is actually being done; the Pokemon with Buffer is simply Knocked Out. (Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) == SHAPESHIFT (Brock's Ninetales - Gym: Challenge) Q. Say I have a Brock's Ninetales with a Double Rainbow Energy attached; I then use Shapeshift to become an -EX Pokemon. What happens to the DRE? Does it stay or get discarded?? A. Since Shapeshift says to "treat it as that Pokemon", and since you cannot have a DRE attached to an -EX Pokemon, the DRE would get discarded. (Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) Q. Would "Shining Star" do the additional 100 damage vs. a Brock's Ninetales that has used its "Shapeshift" power to put a Stage 2 on it, like Aggron or something? A. Yes, the Brock's Ninetales (on top of Brock's Vulpix) would satisfy the evolution part of the criteria, and the Stage 2 evolution card attached to it would satisfy the Stage 2 part of the criteria for Shining Star. (Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- POKEMON ATTACKS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- == DARK LINK (Dark Hypno - EX:Team Rocket Returns) Q. I would like to know whether Dark Hypno's "Dark Link" can copy another Dark Hypno's "Black Magic" attack since it says "other than this pokemon"? A. Yes, if you had a second Dark Hypno in play, you could do that. (Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) == DARKNESS SWITCH (Rocket's Mewtwo EX - EX:Team Rocket Returns) Q. If a Rocket's Mewtwo-EX has 9 damage counters on it and uses "Darkness Switch" against Jumpluff (Buffer), would that trigger "Buffer"? A. No, because Darkness Switch is moving counters, not doing damage. (Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) == DISCONNECT (Manectric EX - EX:Deoxys) Q. Where does the effect of Manectric-EX's "Disconnect" attack reside? On Manectric-EX, on the Defending Pokemon, or someplace else? A. This is one of those attacks whose effect essentially resides on the opponent, since it doesn't specify any Pokemon in the attack text. (Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) == DRAG OFF (Dark Machoke - Team Rocket; Rocket's Sneasel EX - EX:Team Rocket Returns; Sharpedo EX - EX:Deoxys) [CHRISBO NOTE: Add Rocket's Sneasel EX & Sharpedo EX to the header section] Q. Say I have a Rocket's Sneasel-EX with one Darkness Energy on him. If I use "Drag Off" and bring up a benched Pidgey, does it do 20 damage (10 from the attack and 10 from Darkness)? Or does it do 30 damage (10+10 to the initial Pokemon for Darkness Energy, then "10 damage to the new Defending Pokémon" in addition to that)? A. The Drag Off attack says, "before doing damage...". So in the scenario above, no damage would be done to the current Defending Pokemon and then 20 damage (10+10) would be done to the one brought up from the bench. (Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) == ICE GENERATOR (Ancient Technical Machine [Ice] - EX:Hidden Legends) [see also Trainer Cards - Ancient Technical Machines] Q. If I use the Ancient Technical Machine [Ice] and my opponent has Claw Fossil, Root Fossil, etc. in play are they discarded? A. Yes, Fossil cards are to be treated as both Trainer Cards and as Pokemon while in play. (Apr 5, 2005 PUI Announcements; Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) ***** PREVIOUS RULING: THIS ONE HAS BEEN OVERRULED; See Above ***** Q. If I use the Ancient Technical Machine [Ice] and my opponent has Claw Fossil, Root Fossil, etc. in play are they discarded? A. No, the text on the most recent Fossil cards say that while they're in play they are to be treated as a Pokémon "instead of a trainer card". (Jun 17, 2004 PUI Rules Team) == LIMITATION (Sableye - EX:Deoxys) Q. Where does the effect of Sableye's "Limitation" attack reside? On Sableye, on the Defending Pokemon, or someplace else? A. This is one of those attacks whose effect essentially resides on the opponent, since it doesn't specify any Pokemon in the attack text. (Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) == MASS DESTRUCTION (Electrode - EX:Hidden Legends) Q. (Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) == PSYLOOP (Xatu - EX:Deoxys) Q. For Xatu's "Psyloop" attack, what all does the phrase "Trainer cards your opponent has in play" include? Does it include ones in discard pile? A. It includes things like Pokémon Tools that are attached to your opponent's Pokémon, Stadium cards your opponent played, or Claw Fossil, Root Fossil, or Mysterious Fossil your opponent has in play. Cards in the discard pile are not considered to be "in play". (Feb 10, 2005 PUI Rules Team; Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) == SHINING STAR (Latios* - EX:Deoxys) Q. If my opponent used Archie or Maxie on a Stage 1 Pokemon and then evolved that Pokemon into its Stage 2 evolution, would I be attacking the new Pokemon with Latios*'s "Shining Star" for 50 or 150 damage? A. Shining Star requires two conditions to be met in order to do the extra damage: 1) The opponent's Pokemon needs to say "Stage 2" on the card; 2) It needs to have a card beneath it, i.e. be "Evolved" (it does not need two evolutions beneath it, but at least one). For example, if a Pidgey had been Rare Candy'd to Pidgeot, the attack would do 150. If you had started with a Stage 1 that evolved to a Stage 2, the attack would do 150. If you had Maxie'd a Stage 2 directly into play, the attack would do only 50. (Apr 7, 2005 PUI Rules Team) == SWIFT (Misty's Staryu - Gym: Heroes Expansion, Cyndaquil - Neo: Genesis Expansion, Electabuzz - Neo: Genesis Expansion; others) Q. (Jun 17, 2004 PUI Rules Team) == ARCHIE / MAXIE (EX:Team Magma/Team Aqua) Q. If my opponent used Archie or Maxie on a Stage 1 Pokemon and then evolved that Pokemon into its Stage 2 evolution, would I be attacking the new Pokemon with Latios*'s "Shining Star" for 50 or 150 damage? A.
